Henry Stumpf, Old Resident Dies - 77 years and 16 Days

Henry Stumpf (1838-1915)Henry Stumpf, one of the old residents of Collinsville, who came to the city in 1872, and engaged at his trade of shoemaker until compelled to retire from business a number of years ago, died Sunday evening at the family residence, 125 West Church street. Mr. Stumpf has not been in vigorous health for the past ten years, although able to be about until a few weeks ago. He was widely known to the older residents of the city, and nearly everybody who lived in this city during a period dating back a number of years knew Shoemaker Stumpf and his garden, which was one of the best kept and most fertile spots in the city. Mr. Stumpf always had the earliest and finest of garden produce and supplied many families regularly with their supplies in this line. Frugal in habits, this good old German type of citizen amassed a competency and later years has lived at ease. He was an earnest member of the German Evangelical church, of this city, and generous in his support of that institution.

Mr. Stumpf was born at Gross Zimern, Germany on the 23rd of December, 1838, and came to this country when a boy. May 7, 1861, during the Civil War he enlisted as a private in Company F, Independent Regiment United States Reserve Corps and served with distinction until September 22, 1864, being discharged at Atlanta, Georgia. He was married to Mary Briedenbach and of this union no children were born, and although the couple were childless they practically reared 11 children. Besides the widow who survives, a brother George Stumpf, of Kansas City, and a sister Mrs. Mary Mueller, of this city. Also a number of nephews and nieces. Will Osborn, of this city, is a nephew and was reared by the Stumpfs.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the German Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. Bierbaum, the internment being at St. John’s Evangelical cemetery. The community extends sympathy to those bereaved.
