William H. Thompson (1842-1929) - Lone Confederate laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery

In Memoriam Ribbon honoring William H. Thompson, C.S.A. The Conquered Banner - poem by Father Joseph Ryan

The memorial service for Sgt. William H. Thompson, C.S.A., took place on May 16, 1998 ( Armed Forces Day ) as part of Collinsville's celebration of National Historic Preservation Week at Glenwood Cemetery.

The service was organized by the Maj. Gen. Bushrod R. Johnson Camp #1718, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Since there were no Confederate veterans groups in the area, Thompson had never received a military funeral. To correct this omission the Johnson Camp organized the event with the help of local historical and civic groups.

The Bushrod R. Johnson Camp #1718 was organized at Granite City, Illinois on August 12, 1995 and represented the Sons of Confederate Veterans in southwestern Illinois. It received its Charter on September 5, 1995 and a Charter ceremony was held on November 3, 1995 at Granite City.

The first Camp Commander was Eugene T. Beals who severed until October 18, 2001. H. Lee Kramer served as Commander until the camp closed on March 20, 2003 at Collinsville.

Note: The Conquered Banner poem appeared on the back side of the memorial program honoring Sgt. Thompson.
