Bartholomew Vujtech (1835-1908)
 
Born in Bohemia on 22 Aug 1835, Bartholomew Vujtech was one of the pioneer residents of Collinsville, and associated with the early building of the city. Employed in various trades, such as merchant, tailor, laborer, fitter & handy man, he came to own considerable property in the business portion of town, including a general merchandise store on East Main street in Collinsville..

He served with distinction during the Civil War, enlisting in Co. K of the 144th regiment of Illinois which was organized at Alton, Illlinois, and mustered in for one year October 21, 1864. They regiment was ordered to St. Louis, and duty in that District until July, 1865 and then mustered out July 14, 1865, having lost sixty-nine men by disease.

Bartholomew died on 30 Dec 1908. His funeral was attended by the Sammuel T. Hughes Post GAR, of which he had been a member. He was survived by his wife Dora and six children.
