| Hugh Wilson died
at his residence on Main Street at 4:30 o'clock
Friday morning. Mr. Wilson was one of
Collinsville's most respected citizens, and his
death was a shock to his wide circle of friends,
many of whom did not know of his illness. He was
stricken with paralysis Tuesday morning at 9
o'clock while walking in the yard. He was carried
into the house and the family physician sent for.
Twenty minutes afterwards he lapsed into
unconsciousness, from which he never recovered. Mr. Wilson was born in
Zanesville, Ohio, February 25, 1839. He belonged
to one of the oldest and best families in that
city. His father was an extensive tobacco grower.
He came to Illinois when quite young, and
completed his education at Shurtleff college,
Alton, locating in Collinsville about 40 years
ago. Mr. Wilson was a veteran of the Civil War
and a member of Sam T. Hughes Post No. 534 G.A.R.
of this city, who took charge of the funeral.
Deceased leaves
surviving him his widow, five sons and one
daughter. Harry and Attorney I. Joel Wilson, of
St. Louis, and Alex, Hugh Jr., Corwin and Miss
Annie Wilson, of this city. The funeral services
were conducted at the family residence at 3:30
Sunday afternoon by the Rev. W.A. Cross of the M.
E. church. Interment in Glenwood cemetery. The
family have the sympathy of the entire community
in their sad bereavement.
