| During
World War I, some 90,000 troops passed
through Camp Custer which was built less
than six months after the United States
entered World War I. Construction had
begun in July of 1917 and originally
opened with some 1,375 buildings but
within in five months expanded to 2,000
buildings accomodating some 36,000 men -
including Pvt. Frank Quatto and Andy
Pinson who died here in 1918 of the
Spanish Influenza. They were laid to rest
in their home town of Collinsville,
Illinois. |
