| Camp Zachary Taylor was a
military training camp for over 125,000
men. Located in Louisville, Kentucky it
was named for President Zachary Taylor.
It opened in 1917, to train soldiers for
U.S. involvement in World War I. One of
16 national army camps in the U.S., it
was built in 90 days on 2,730 acres and
contained some 1,700 building and housing
40,000 troops. The first troops arrived
here in September and in 1918 the
influenza epidemic struck the camp,
killing hundreds of soldiers and
hospitalizing thousands more. The camp
officially closed in 1920 and the land
was auctioned off in May of 1921.
