Established on 14 October 1918 in an area captured by the US 32nd Division, the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery is located east of the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon in the Meuse region of northeastern France near the border with Belgium.

The cemetery contains graves of 14,246, including 486 unknown soldiers, and panels on the walls of the Memorial Chapel record the names of another 954 missing.

Among those soldiers from Collinsville, Illinois who were laid to rest here are Sergeant Frank Stucker who had been editor of the Collinsville Herald and Pvt. Bernard T. Rissi who had been drafted. Pvt. Andrew Karwelat is among those listed on the Tablets of the Missing." All were killed in action during the Argonne Offensive.
