Dies - Altons last
Spanish-American War veteran, Walter Cook, died
Friday at his home at 621 Spring St. He was 93
years old. Cook served in the Navy from 1898 to
1902.
Walter
Cook, 93, of 621 Spring St., Alton and the last
surviving Alton Spanish-American War veteran,
died at 2 p.m. Friday at his home. He had been in
failing health for the past two years and
hospitalized last December.
He
was born in Jersey County, November 17, 1875,
where he lived before coming to Alton 70 years
ago. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs.
William H. Cook.
Cook
spent most of his life employed with the former
Standard- Tilton Milling Co., where he was
employed for 37 years.
In
1965, he was made honorary member of the Alton
Barracks Veterans of World War I. The last
survivor of the Spanish-American Camp Lemen was a
member of the Doby Club.
He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Cooper of Coats.
Kan.; two brothers, Rolland of Alton and Elmer of
St. Louis; and nieces and nephews. Two sisters
and five brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation
at Morrow - Quinn Mortuary will be at 3 p.m.
Sunday, where the Rev. Laurence Wagley will
officiate at funeral services at 10:30 a.m.
Monday. Internment will be in the Alton City
Cemetery.
