CAPTAIN DAVIS
OF LITCHFIELD DIES - DEATH ENDS ACTIVE AND LONG
CAREER
David
Davis, four times mayor of Litchfield, state
representative for the old 38th district and
operator of the gas and electric company here for
many years, died this morning at 5:25 o'clock in
St. Francis Hospital.
He
was 90 years old last Sept. 12 and a lifelong
resident of Litchfield. He entered the hospital
on Feb. 22.
Mr.
Davis commanded Litchfield's company
"K" of the old Fourth Illinois Infantry
regiment during the Spanish American war and was
the first state commander of the United Spanish
War Veterans organization.He served several terms
in this office later. He was a charter member of
Litchfield's Francis E. Greene camp, USWV.
At
the time of his death he was chairman of the
state Spanish War veterans commission. He spent
much of his time in recent years assisting fellow
Spanish war veterans from his office in the
News-Herald building.
Surviving
besides the sister here, is a brother Col. Edward
Davis, retired from the regular army and now
residing in Santa Barbara, Calif., and a number
of nieces and nephews, Mrs. Sally Bray, Glencoe,
Ill.,Frank Crabb, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs.
Blanche Robinson, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Jeanne
Stevens, Naples, Italy; J. Davis Crabb, Gordon,
Wis.; Mrs. Gary Barhell, Wilmette, Ill.; and Mrs.
John Collins, Moorestown, N.J.
The
body was removed to Ross & Becker funeral
home for funeral arrangements. Service will be
held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the funeral
home. Rev. Robert Turner, Webster Groves, Mo.,
minister of the local Universalists church,
officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at
Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral
home after 2 p.m. tomorrow.
