| Called upon by the
Governor, all Illinois regiments
reported to the State Fair
Grounds by the 27th of April,
1898,. The Exposition building,
located on the State Fair grounds
in Springfield was brought into
use as Camp Tanner. Within two
days, seven infantry regiments
and the 1st Illinois cavalry
regiment had reported for service
where they received their
physical examinations and were
mustered into federal service. After completing
their mobilization and training
at Camp Tanner, the Illinois
regiments were entrained and
deployed to separate mobilization
and training camps in the South.
In each of these camps the
soldiers received further
training.
