Photos taken & contributed by Richard Schachtsiek

Called upon by the Governor, all Illinois regiments reported to the State Fair Grounds by the 27th of April, 1898,. The Exposition building, located on the State Fair grounds in Springfield was brought into use as Camp Tanner. Within two days, seven infantry regiments and the 1st Illinois cavalry regiment had reported for service where they received their physical examinations and were mustered into federal service.

After completing their mobilization and training at Camp Tanner, the Illinois regiments were entrained and deployed to separate mobilization and training camps in the South. In each of these camps the soldiers received further training.
