This regiment was enrolled June 28, 1898, and mustered into the United States service at Springfield, Illinois, (Camp Tanner) July 11, 1898. Moved from Springfield to Jacksonville, Florida (Camp Cuba Libre) on August 5, 1898. The 9th left Savannah for Havana, Cuba on January 3, 1899. The regiment went on a trial march to Guines , Cuba (February 19 to February 27, 1899) and returned to Havana. The distance was approximately sixty-six miles. Unit left Havana, Cuba to Detention Camp Danfuskie Island, South Carolina on April 19, 1899. The 9th went from the Detention Camp to Augusta, Georgia on April 28, 1899. The Regiment was mustered out of service on May 20, 1899 at Augusta, Georgia.
NOTE: The Cuban Occupation Medal, shown above, was issued to all officers and men who served in the Army of Occupation commencing after the surrender of Santiago until May 20, 1902. The Ninth Illinois Infantry served in the Army of Occupation.
