Tennessee Volunteer Infantry

| This regiment was
mustered into Federal service at Nashvilles
Cherokee Park on May 26, 1898. The unit soon
moved from Nashville to San Francisco (Camp
Merritt), California and remained there for
several months. In late 1898 the regiment was
sent to the recently acquired Philippine Islands
to reinforce the American army against the
Filipino insurgents under the leadership of
Emilio Aquinaldo. They engaged enemy in Manila in
February 1899. They played a major role in
capturing the city of Iloilo. The second largest
city in the Philippine Islands. The regiment was
very active and successful against the guerilla
warfare tactics used by the Filipino Insurrectos.
The First Tennessee Infantry was mustered out of
Federal service on November 22, 1901 at the
Presidio, San Franciso, California. |

| NOTE: The
Spanish Service medal, posted above left, was
awarded for service in the Spanish American War
and issued to all officers and men who served 90
days excluding the theater of operations in the
war. |
| NOTE:
Philippine Campaign Medal, posted above right,
was awarded to all officers & men who served
during the Philippine Insurrection from February
4, 1899 to July 4, 1902. |
