Served on the USS Montgomery during the Spanish-American conflict. Patrick Gribben, son of a farmer called Thomas E. Gribben, was born in the townland of Ballybrannan, parish of Grange in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

As a young man, Patrick left his native Ireland and enlisted in the US Navy, after arriving in the United States in the 1890's. He survived the war, and went on to spend his whole life in US Navy service until retirement.

The Spanish Campaign Naval Service medal was awarded to all officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps who served afloat in the theater of actual operations or in the Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines and Guam between May 1 and August 16, 1898.

The U.S.S. Montgomery
During the Spanish-American War, she cruised near Cuba and Haiti in April 1898. In May she joined the blockade of Havana and took two prizes, Lorenzo and Fraeguito, on the 5th of May. A week later, she shelled the Spanish forts.
