Hospital Steward
Frederick Wheeler Palmer

33rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Field & Staff

Frederick was born on 15 May 1872 in Brooklyn, Jackson Co., Michigan and was the son of Dr. Emmett Newton Palmer & Antoinette Lovell (Williams). He entered medical school at his father's alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he graduated and became the house physician for the University hospital of the U of MI for two years. He was then associated with his father's practice until the Spanish-American War.

He enlisted on 26 Apr 1898, and was mustered in at Island Lake, Michigan on the 29th of April. He served as a hospital steward and surgeon in the 33rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Field & Staff. In early July, the 33rd left from Tampa, Florida and arrived in Cuba following the battles at El Caney and San Juan. Fred supervised a hospital ship, returning with the first transport of wounded soldiers back to the United Sates, was honorably discharged and appointed assistant surgeon at Camp Alger, Virginia. He was later transferred to Camp Mead, near Philadelphia and then sent to Somerville, South Carolina where he remained until May of 1899 when he resigned his office. In September of that year he was sent to the Philippines and appointed assistant surgeon with the rank of Captain where he had charge of the second largest hospital on the Islands at Nueva Caceras. He continued in this position until December of 1902.

He had a number of narrow escapes while assisting in the removal of wounded soldiers from the battlefields and was seriously wounded himself. On another occasion his life was saved by two friendly Filipinos. After his return he rejoined his father's practice in Brooklyn, Michigan.

On 06 Nov 1906, he married Marie Riordan in San Francisco, she having been born in Arizona in 1880 and was the daughter of Dennis Riordan & Celine (Baer). Fred died on 16 Feb 1944 in Washington D.C., and Marie on 07 Sep 1948. Both are laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
