| Frederick was born on 15 May
1872 in Brooklyn, Jackson Co., Michigan
and was the son of Dr. Emmett Newton
Palmer & Antoinette Lovell
(Williams). He entered medical school at
his father's alma mater, the University
of Michigan, where he graduated and
became the house physician for the
University hospital of the U of MI for
two years. He was then associated with
his father's practice until the
Spanish-American War. He enlisted on 26
Apr 1898, and was mustered in at Island
Lake, Michigan on the 29th of April. He
served as a hospital steward and surgeon
in the 33rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry
Field & Staff. In early July, the
33rd left from Tampa, Florida and arrived
in Cuba following the battles at El Caney
and San Juan. Fred supervised a hospital
ship, returning with the first transport
of wounded soldiers back to the United
Sates, was honorably discharged and
appointed assistant surgeon at Camp
Alger, Virginia. He was later transferred
to Camp Mead, near Philadelphia and then
sent to Somerville, South Carolina where
he remained until May of 1899 when he
resigned his office. In September of that
year he was sent to the Philippines and
appointed assistant surgeon with the rank
of Captain where he had charge of the
second largest hospital on the Islands at
Nueva Caceras. He continued in this
position until December of 1902.
He had a
number of narrow escapes while assisting
in the removal of wounded soldiers from
the battlefields and was seriously
wounded himself. On another occasion his
life was saved by two friendly Filipinos.
After his return he rejoined his father's
practice in Brooklyn, Michigan.
On 06 Nov
1906, he married Marie Riordan in San
Francisco, she having been born in
Arizona in 1880 and was the daughter of
Dennis Riordan & Celine (Baer). Fred
died on 16 Feb 1944 in Washington D.C.,
and Marie on 07 Sep 1948. Both are laid
to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
