Harry T. Wandling, 85, died
Friday at John Cochrans Veterans Hospital
at St. Louis, dropping Altons roster of
Spanish-American War veterans to one. The remaining veteran is
Walter Cook of 621 Spring St., who, with Mr.
Wandling met periodically as the only members of
Harry Lemen Camp of Spanish American War
Veterans. During late years, by mutual agreement,
Cook served as commander of the post and Mr.
Wandling was adjutant.
The two-man
meetings kept the post officially intact, Mr.
Wandlings son Ralph, said today. Ralph
Wandling said the organizations books are
at senior Wandlings home at 3411 Brown St.
During the
Spanish-American War Mr. Wandling served in the
Philippine Islands with Company D 9th Illinois
Infantry.*
He was connected
with the foundry business for many years, first
with Duncan Foundry and later operated a foundry
business of his own. He held a patent on a
self-cleaning link for chain-fed stokers. In late
years he was service officer in the Alton office
of Illinois Veterans Commission.
*Reporter error: The 9th
Illinois served in Cuba and not in the Philippine
Islands as stated.
