From the Obituary of George W. Armistead

George Washington ARMISTEAD who lived on his farm at Oak Grove, 3 miles west of Stanton, Franklin Co., died at his home May 28, 1920.  He was born October 18, 1842, in the vicinity of his present home to Robert B.  and Agnes Mosby (Walton) ARMISTEAD.  He spent his boyhood days with his parents until the call of his Country, when on the 21st day of September 1861, at the age of 19, he answered the call by enlisting in Capt. John McFall's Company I, 26th Regiment Missouri Volunteers; served at the front and was honorably discharged by reason of disability, in camp before Corinth Mississippi on the 3rd day of April 1862 returning to his home.  

On Jan 18 1864 he married Miss Martha Jane Brown.  To this union eight children were born, of whom five survive, Mrs. Nancy J. Rudolph, Mrs. Phoebe Agnes Bell, Jesse J., William Robert, and Mrs. Julia A. Greenwood of St. Louis.  He was preceded in death by John ARMISTEAD, Infant, and Mary Virginia Harmes. He was again married on May 28, 1888, to Miss Frances Elizabeth Byrd (at Union, MO).  To this union were born twelve children, seven of whom survive, Mrs. Etta Elizabeth Cooper of Villa Ridge, Leander "Lee" Barthold, Charles Henry, Orville Wesley, Claude Ray, Ernest "Duke" Alfred, Mrs. Daisy Alma Schuler of St. Louis.  He was preceded in death by Edna Mosby, Clemma Josephine, Oscar Monroe, George Edward and Howard Maynard.  He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Agnes Nettell, who resides on the adjoining farm who attended him during his last days with all the tender care and love of a sister. And many many more relatives. He had been a farmer all his life and resided on the present home site since 1884 and enjoyed a happy and prosperous life until his illness.  

He was buried in the Hendricks Cemetery Sunday, May 30, 1920. The services being conducted by the A. L. Sullivan of Sullivan, MO.
