Asa Franklin Burlingame (Jr.) Asa Burlingame private Co. D, 26th MO Inf Asa Franklin Burlingame (Jr.), born May 15, 1838 in Morgan county, Ohio, was descended from a long line of Burlingames dating back to the earliest colonial period of America 1 . He was the sixth of eleven 2 children of Asa Franklin Burlingame (Sr.) and Sarah E. Severance. Asa Franklin Burlingame (Sr.) was born February 28, 1790, in Cranston, Rhode Island. In about 1810, he married Lydia Mowry, who was born about 1788 in Belle Valley, Ohio 3, in what is now Noble county. Asa (Sr.) served as a Captain of the Cranston, R.I. Militia in the war of 1812-14. After the war, Asa (Sr.) and his family joined the company of Colonel Joseph Lippitt and moved west. Asa (Sr.) purchased land in the northwest territory at what is now Hiramsburgh, Ohio, and made a home for his family. He was the first Postmaster of the Hiramsburgh, and was also innkeeper, farmer, judge and teacher. Asa (Sr.) and Lydia had five (5) children together and she would die August 18, 1820 shortly after giving birth to her last child 4 . Asa later met and married Sarah E. (Sally) Severance in October of 1822. Sally was born April 5, 1791, in Boscawen, New Hampshire. Sometime after their last child was born, the Asa Burlingame (Sr.) family moved west, settling in Cole county, Missouri. Two older sons, Horace and Waterman, remained behind with their families. In 1850, Asa (Sr.) and his family were enumerated in Cole county as the 308th family on page 22 and 22a. By the 1860's, the family had moved to Miller county, near Iberia, Missouri, where Sally died in October, 1862, and Asa (Sr.) died March 6, 1864. Both were buried somewhere near Iberia, Mo. When the Civil War broke out, Asa Franklin Burlingame (Jr.) was probably living with or near his parents in Miller county working on the family farm. He enlisted and served in company H of the Osage County Home Guard. After his 3 month service was completed, he enlisted for 3 years on October 12, 1861, to serve in the Union army. On January 10, 1862, he was mustered into Company D of the 25th Missouri Infantry regiment by Lieut. William Wherry at Castle Rock, Missouri. He was 23 years old, 5' 8 1/2" tall, with black hair, black eyes and a dark complexion. Captain L. D. Maynard was his company commanding officer, who regarded Asa enough to assign him as the third ranking Sergeant in the company. To date (3/2/02) Asa's service record has not been researched and the history of his activities in the 26th are unknown. Asa (Jr.) came back from the war and returned to his family farm where he married his brother's widow. The former Elizabeth Elliott married Francis Scott Burlingame December 23, 1860 in Latham, Missouri. Elizabeth was born January 25, 1841, in Adair county, Kentucky. She had one child with Francis, also named Asa. Francis answered the call for troops by joining the 10th Missouri Cavalry. He died July 7, 1863, near Iuka, Mississippi either from illness or from fighting during Grant's Vicksburg campaign. Asa (Jr.) and Elizabeth are reported to have ten (10) children together.
