Charles M. Marsh

Charles Marsh was born in Paris France on Jan 15, 1819.  He immigrated to the USA about 1848 with his wife Virginia Louise Marsh and their four children;  Charles, Pauline, Eugene and Elise.

26th Regiment Infantry Volunteers lists the following:

Charles Marsh, age 43, rank Private, Company F, Captain Dean; enlisted
November 1, 1861, Pacific MO,   Sentenced by court martial for desertion to be imprisoned for 3 months.  Mustered out December 19, 1864 at Millers Station Georgia.

Discharge papers from the Union Army read:

“Charles Marsh, private of Captain William L Wheelers Company 26th regiment of Missouri Infantry Volunteers.  Enrolled November 1, 1861 to serve 3 years.  Discharged December 19, 1864 at Millers Station, Georgia”.   The document states Charles Marsh was born in Paris, age 43, 5’8”, light complexion, hazel eyes, auburn hair, occupation as civilian “Machinist”.

After the war, Charles fathered his last child, Mary Marsh.  She was born on February 26, 1866.

Charles Marsh filed an application in St. Louis County Court to homestead 80 acres of land situated 4 miles north and west of Cuba, Missouri, in Crawford County, in May 1873.  This application was never perfected and no title was granted. 

Charles Marsh moved from St. Louis to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer soldiers in Leavenworth, KS in October 1889.  He died March 23, 1893 from old age.  He was not confined to his bed until ten days prior to his death.  He is buried at the military cemetery at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Charles M. Marsh’s children (all born in France except Mary):

-         Charles V. Marsh – homesteaded a farm in Crawford County, MO.  Had a daughter Mathilde.
-         Eugene Marsh – (may have died as a young man during an influenza epidemic)
-         Elise (Marsh) Smythe died at age 28
-         Pauline (Marsh) Moussu, birthday April 27, married H.O. Moussu, moved to Oregon, died 5/26/1915
-         Mary (Marsh) Carey, born February 26, 1866 in Missouri.  Married in 1887 to Peter John Carey in St. Louis, they had three children;  Charles Michael Carey;  Loretta Marsh (Carey) Stepenhorst; and Peter George Carey.    Mary died in St. Louis 8/21/1948
