Dr. Jonathan Slater Prout

Jonathan S. Prout  regimental surgeon  26th MO Inf 

The following information came from the pension record of Jonathan S. Prout, National Archives file designation C 2500-449.

  • Born in Washington D. C. on Dec. 3, 1833. 
  • Served as contract medical officer at Cuba and Pacific, MO in the fall of 1861
  • Enrolled at St. Louis, Missouri on January 13, 1862.
  • Commissioned January 20, 1862.
  • Appearance at time of commission: 5' 11" tall, blue eyes, brown hair turning gray, fair complexion
  • Temporarily on duty at General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee, in fall of 1862.
  • Discharged January 10, 1865 in Savannah, Georgia.
  • Served as acting staff surgeon, surgeon-in-chief 3rd Div. 15 Army Corps of the Army of Tennessee Jan. 10, 1865 to April 1865.
  • Served at Grant Hospital, N. Y. Harbor from May 4 to June 22, 1865
  • Moved to Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1865 and lived there until 1909 at 26 Schermerhorn Street..
  • Moved to 9th St., Garden City, NY until Death.
  • Appearance in July 1905 described as: 5' 11" tall, 160 pounds, blue eyes, white hair bald on top with mole on top of head; mole on back of right shoulder,  fair complexion,
  • Appearance in February 1907; 6' tall, light complexion, gray eyes, gray hair.
  • Married Lilian Comstock on January 12, 1885, in Trinity P. E. Church in Hartford, Conn. by the Rev.S. O. Seymour.  No children.  Only spouse.
  • Died in the Fishkill, NY home of niece Harriot C. Barlow (Mrs. William A. Barlow) on Jun 12, 1928.
  • Buried in Fishkill Rural Cemetery June 14, 1928.
