Death Claims Aged Soldier Uncle Lewis Gullett Answers Last Roll Call
again the death angel has issued his summons to one of salt licks old and respected citizens. on friday morning december 3rd 1909 the the subject of this notice passed gently and peacefully away to his eternal reward in the home of his son sherman gullett, our post master and was laid to rest in the dickerson graveyard, saturday p.m.
the funeral services were under direction of the methodist eprisopal church, the odd fellows, and the grand army post. each with the deceased was a member.rev j.g.rager, pastor of the church,had charge of and conducted that part of the exercises belonging to the church in the home; mrs irene points had charge of the organ. while pator and others didv the singing. brother g.n. vaughn a visting minister, read the army prayer wm cook noble grand odd fellows. had charge of the ceremonies belonging to the order enoch wills and elijah sorrell conducted the part belonging to the grand army post. and w.p. dickerson served as marshal of the procession.all parts of the service were timely and well conducted the weather was ideal pleasant as a may day the ground was dry and the roads in good shape makeing it agreeable for the procession and burial and the citizens generally did themselves great credit by attenting the last sad rites of occasion. the following are some special statements read at the begining of the funeral by rev h.j.ramey and which has been corrected for publication. lewis w gullett was born at the foot of the cumberland mountains while his parents were encamping on there way from north carolina to ky 18 december 1833. brother gullett was married to zylpha may, march 9th 1865 to whom was born one son sherman gullett now our townsman and postmaster. sister gullett died in salt lick, may 2nd 1899.
l.w.gullett enlisted in the union army in 1861 and served three years, four months and 2 days in company i 14th ky vol infantry.
Brother gullett became a member of the church a little over 30 years ago, during the first trip of geo. o barns, evangilist,through the mountains.the waters first acquantance with brother gullett was in magoffin co about 20 years ago, while presideing elder of the ashland district,and seven years ago last may i became his pastor in salt lick and that relationship was continued for about 16 months. since that time during the last 3 or 4 years he was a member of my bible class of the methodist episcopal sunday school, and has been quite a regular attendant when able.his health had been failing guite perceptibly for the last 2 years.
he moved to salt lick in 1896 haveing left the salyersville neighborhood the previous year.while in magoffin co he held membership in methodist episcopal church.
