Daniel Tucker Winters was born on November 5, 1841 in Live Oak County Texas. He is the son of Orin Lemon Winters and Susannah W. Elroy. Daniel was married to Nancy Jane Humphries . They had the following children. Minnie, Mary F., Emma, Ida D. Wiley, James, Samuel and Joseph. Daniel died on February 15, 1938. He is buried in Bigfoot Texas, Frio County.
Daniel enlisted on Sept. 23, 1861 at Brownsville, TX at age 19. His enlistment officer was Capt. John Donelson and he enlisted for a period of 1 year. On the muster roll of Jan. 1, 1862 there
is
a note that he was enlisted by Capt. J.A. Settle. At enlistment time the Cavalry valued his horse at $ 65.00 and his personal
equipment at $15.00. His record shows that he was 19 years old. On
the muster roll for Jan.1, 1862 the Cavalry paid him $ 39.20 for the use of his horse.
On the muster roll for June 30, 1863, Daniel is listed
as" Prisoner of war, taken 21June 1863." On the muster of Aug, 1863
his is still listed as a prisoner of War, but on Feb.1864 his
muster roll states , " Absent - Paroled prisoner not yet reported for duty." Daniel had been taken prisoner at Lafourche
Crossing and placed in prison at Algiers on June 22, 1863. Algiers is near
New Orleans. Even though the muster roll of Feb. 1864 indicates that he was no longer a prisoner, he was not paroled until
July 24, 1865.
