Additional Information: Richard enlisted on Oct. 1, 1862 in San Antonio, TX. His enlistment officer was Capt. McRae. On the muster roll of June 30, 1863, Richard was listed as "sick in Hosp. New Iberia." Iberia is in western Louisana. On this same muster roll is notes that he was paid $ 48.80 for personal use of his horse. On the muster roll of July-Aug.1863 it is noted that Richard is "absent on sick furlough from Aug.3, 30 days. On Nov. 8, 1863 he is reported as absent without leave. He should have returned from furlough before now. He was evidently considered a deserter for a while because on the muster roll of Jan.-Feb. 1864, it is noted that he is "present-Joined from desertion on Feb.20,1864." It is not uncommon for men to be reported as deserters. It usually was a case of just not returning from sick leave or furlough fast enough. On the muster roll of July 1864, Richard is reported to be " sick in Hospital at Galveston".
Roll - not dated.
